Jonathan's career has taken him several places in the northeast with many years spent in NYC, upstate NY, and the greater Boston area. Originally hailing from the Green Mountains of Vermont, Jon currently plays throughout the NH region with several ensembles, including impulse3, the Soul Revival, and Dr. Sax's Bop Shop.
Jon appears on several records, both as leader and sideman. His groundbreaking project Borderlands combined his NY acoustic jazz trio with a jazz vocalist and operatic soprano. It was released on the UK's Métier Jazz label and received critical acclaim as well as airplay on radio stations throughout the world. Fanfare Magazine's Lynn René Bayley remarked that "Jonathan Lorentz has really got it: a great style, an explorative mind, and a concept that goes beyond the usual fare you hear from jazz groups." Berklee College of Music Professor John Funkhouser celebrates Jonathan for having an "unbeatable sense of time- all the time." And recently, NEA Jazz Master and legendary saxophonist Dave Liebman simply said that Jonathan has that "real big sound on tenor sax!" In recent years Jon performed and recorded with New Orleans’ own Delfeayo Marsalis, Jerry Sabatini’s Sonic Explorers, and jazz vocalist Teri Roiger.
Dr. Lorentz, who holds a PhD from New York University, dedicates himself to keeping music a part of everyday life and integral to the community. Jon has grown the live music scene in New Hampshire since his arrival. From 2011 to 2015 he presented over 200 concerts of touring jazz artists from NYC (and beyond) in concert venues throughout NH, garnering praise from the legendary Downbeat Magazine, as well as NH Magazine, the Hippo Press & New Hampshire Public Radio. He currently is composing and producing his first film score for the Boston-based Lost Jockey film company, slated for release in 2025.
